Teeth are vital for our body, and our goal is to save them whenever possible. However, there are cases where extraction is necessary, including:

• The tooth is so decayed that it cannot be restored with fillings, root canals, or other methods.
• If the tooth has not erupted properly or is obstructed, causing discomfort, such as wisdom teeth.
• In cases where extra teeth cause aesthetic or functional issues.
• Severe periodontal disease.
• If the infected tooth cannot be treated with root canal therapy.
• For orthodontic purposes, if additional space is needed for proper alignment.
• For milk teeth that stay too long, hindering the eruption of permanent teeth.
• If you have been diagnosed with focal disease caused by an infected tooth.

We emphasize that a comprehensive assessment is always conducted before any extraction. If necessary, we will take additional panoramic X-rays or CBCT scans for a clearer picture. Then, in a relaxed environment, we will discuss the results, possible treatment options, and answer any questions you may have.

If the extraction is deemed necessary, we will determine, based on the X-ray, whether it requires a simple extraction or surgical procedure. We will then schedule a suitable time for your oral surgeon to quickly and painlessly perform the extraction.

Thanks to the Artdent method, the usual 30-60 minute surgery time is reduced to just 15-20 minutes. This method reduces surgical stress, decreasing the risk of infection and reducing the healing time by half.

The difference lies in how the procedure is performed. For simple extractions, a tooth with minimal damage is removed through specialized movements after local anesthesia. For difficult-to-access, irregularly shaped, or significantly damaged teeth, a surgical extraction is necessary. This may involve uncovering the tooth and bone, using surgical instruments to remove the tooth, and closing the surgical site with stitches.

The key difference is that a simple extraction can be performed by a general dentist, while surgical extractions are carried out exclusively by an oral surgeon. Recently, many dentists have referred most extractions to oral surgeons because even a simple extraction can turn into a surgical one. Furthermore, it’s preferable to have the tooth extracted by a specialist who will later be responsible for its replacement, as the technique used can preserve enough bone for future implants or prosthetics.

If your tooth extraction is due to dental disease and not space constraints, it’s important to replace the lost tooth. The sooner the replacement happens, the quicker the new tooth will assume the role and function of the old one. Delaying replacement can have serious, negative effects.

• Do not eat while the anesthesia is still active to avoid choking or biting your tongue or lip.
• Avoid rinsing or sucking on the extraction site, as it may cause bleeding.
• The surgical site will be sutured, allowing you to eat and drink normally, including dairy products.
• Avoid bending, lifting, straining, or blowing your nose if the surgery was performed on the upper jaw for about a week following the procedure.
• Do not smoke or consume alcohol for at least 3 days after the surgery.
• Minor bleeding may occur post-surgery, which can be diluted with saliva in the mouth, making it seem more significant. In such cases, bite down on a gauze pad for 10–15 minutes.
• Oral hygiene is crucial for optimal healing. Brush your teeth thoroughly on the day of the procedure, but avoid the surgical area. Starting the next day, gently clean the wound area with a toothbrush to prevent bacterial infection.
• From the third day post-surgery, the use of mouthwash on the affected area is strongly recommended to aid healing.
