Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal disease (also known as gum disease) is one of the most common chronic conditions, affecting over 70% of the Hungarian population. It typically develops silently and without pain, so many patients only seek help once their teeth have already become loose.

Unfortunately, in advanced stages, the disease may cause irreversible damage and prevent tooth preservation. Structural changes in the jawbone can also complicate future dental implant placement.

The earliest stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis (gum inflammation), which is still reversible with proper care. Patients often notice bleeding while brushing. Out of fear, they may avoid cleaning the area, allowing the inflammation to spread deeper, eventually destroying the supporting bone and causing the teeth to loosen and shift.

Multiple factors may contribute to the development of periodontal disease. In most cases, the condition results from a combination of several risk factors.

The most common causes include poor oral hygiene and inadequate daily oral care. As a result, dental plaque builds up, which then hardens into tartar – a perfect environment for bacteria to multiply. This bacterial accumulation initially causes inflammation in the gums, which can eventually extend to deeper supporting structures.

Genetic predisposition also plays a role, as bone loss may progress even with proper oral care and standard treatment.

Certain medications may have side effects that trigger or accelerate the onset of this disease.
In addition, diabetes, smoking, and a high-stress lifestyle are significant contributing factors.

The good news is that with proper oral hygiene, the progression of gum recession can be slowed down – or even stopped entirely.

If periodontal disease is not treated, the inflammation around the tooth can spread deeper into the surrounding bone. This leads to bone loss, which may eventually result in the loss of not only the affected tooth but also neighboring teeth.

The longer treatment is delayed, the more extensively the disease spreads within the oral cavity, potentially triggering additional focal infections and serious, even life-threatening, general health conditions.

Follow-up frequency is always tailored to your individual needs – typically every six months.
Since tartar buildup is the most common trigger for gum disease, we may also recommend ultrasonic tartar removal every 3 to 6 months as a preventive measure.
