Aesthetic Dental Inlay/Onlay

These are indirect restorations fabricated in a dental lab after cavity preparation and impression-taking. One major advantage of inlays/onlays over fillings is that their lab-based production allows for more precise shaping, better restoring the tooth’s original anatomy and chewing function. Inlays/onlays can be made of gold, aesthetic ceramic, or composite resin.

An inlay is a custom-made bonded porcelain restoration that fits within the confines of the tooth’s occlusal surface. It is typically used to rebuild molars when the tooth is fractured or severely decayed.

An onlay is a similar restoration that also covers one or more cusps. While the inlay does not extend over the cusps, the onlay covers both the entire occlusal surface and the cusps.

Their properties are otherwise identical.

They can be made of gold, aesthetic ceramic, or composite resin. One of the biggest advantages of lab-fabricated inlays is their ability to more accurately restore the anatomical shape and function of the tooth compared to traditional fillings – thus improving chewing efficiency.

At least two visits are required. During the first, after anesthesia, we remove decay and bacteria, pretreat the cavity, and take an impression. The cavity is then sealed temporarily. On the second visit, the custom-made inlay is tried in and, once confirmed perfect, it is permanently cemented into place.
